Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Good morning, Marilyn. Yesterday, as you’re no doubt aware, was Valentine’s Day. I am so happy and grateful for my wonderful fiancee, but to get here with them, I had my fair share of breakups. And of course, I had to liken breaking up with a bad boyfriend or girlfriend to seniors downsizing their long-time family home.

Let’s start by acknowledging that breaking up with your long-time home is hard to do. Here are the similarities:

  1. Be prepared for the emotional baggage: Leaving your long-time family home means facing the flood of old memories – some beautiful, some nostalgic, and some you’d rather forget. Just realize that this is all a perfectly normal part of the process.
  2. Understand that you might have held on too long: You know your current home isn’t working anymore, but the comfort and familiarity makes it hard to let go. I can honestly say that downsizing doesn’t get any easier as we age, so better to look the situation in the eye and tell yourself, “I can do better!”
  3. Understating how bad it has gotten: I hear many seniors say they’re hanging on, or doing alright, but really they are stressed and lonely. Merely surviving isn’t anyone’s goal for life. If only they knew how downsizing could actually help them to thrive!
  4. Friends and family have been telling you to leave for years: Sometimes our loved ones can see our situation with more clarity than we can. If your kids are worried, or express that they wish you were closer, it might be time to see how your relationship with this house is hurting the ones closest to you.
  5. You fear starting over: The idea of reinventing your way of life might be both exciting and terrifying. But this is a wonderful opportunity to establish a future that serves your lifestyle, aging, health and wealth needs, both now and in the future.
  6. Finally realizing how much freedom you’ve gained: Once you’re on the other side of your downsizing, you’re going to enjoy freedom to follow new pursuits, the time to invest in relationships, and the money to plan for your future care. The best part is the peace of mind knowing that this is taken care of. You’ll most likely wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

In order to make room for something better, you have to be willing to let go of the parts of your life that aren’t working.

If your home right now falls into that category, then let me reassure you that help is available.
