Tips for Hiring a Realtor™
Hiring a Realtor™ is an important decision, especially for seniors who may have specific needs or concerns when buying and selling a home. Here are some tips to help seniors find the right realtor:
- Look for experience with Seniors
Choose a Realtor™ with experience working with Seniors. Look for designations like Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) or Accredited Seniors Agent (ASA) which indicates specialized training in assisting older adults. Ask them how many senior clients they served last year.
- Check references and reviews
Ask for references from other senior clients or read online reviews. A Realtor™ with a good track record will have positive testimonials from previous clients. Even better, ask for a word- of-mouth recommendation from a senior friend or family member.
- Assess communication skills
Ensure the realtor is patient, a good listener, and communicates clearly. Seniors may prefer different communication methods, so find someone who can accommodate your preferences, whether that's phone calls, emails, or in person meetings.
- Understand the market
Choose a Realtor™ who is knowledgeable about the real estate market, especially neighborhoods that are senior friendly or have the amenities you need. If you’re a seller, ask for supporting information to back up their opinion of value for your property. They should provide you with a detailed CMA, or Comparative Market Analysis before you decide on a selling price.
- Discuss your specific needs (and wants)
Look for a Realtor™ who is open to your needs and expectations. Whether you're downsizing, looking for a single story home, or moving closer to family, it’s important that your Realtor™ shows understanding, and prioritize your unique requirements. Remember, they work for you; not the other way around!
- Inquire about additional services
Some Realtors™ offer extra services, such as help to declutter or organize a move. These services can be particularly helpful for seniors who might need assistance with the physical aspects of moving.
- Evaluate their Network
A well-connected Realtor™ can recommend other professionals you may need, like home inspectors, movers, contractors or elder law attorneys. Is coordinating these other service providers your job or do they take care of it for you?
- Ask about marketing strategies
If selling a home, ask how the Realtor™ plans to market your property. Seniors may prefer methods that don't rely solely on digital platforms, so ensure the realtor uses a mix of online and traditional marketing.
- Check for patience and empathy
Moving or selling a home can be an emotional process, especially for seniors. Find a Realtor™ who is empathetic and willing to move at a pace that is comfortable for you.
- Get everything in writing
Get all agreements, including Commission rates, in writing. Make sure every cost that is covered by your Realtor™ is clearly listed. Take the time to read through the contracts carefully and don't hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear. You should have all the time you need to be comfortable with what you’re signing. If you feel pressured or bullied, show them the door!
Whether you’re a first-time or first-time-in-a-long-time client, these tips can help seniors make a more informed decision when hiring a realtor, ensuring that the process of buying or selling a home is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
