The Decluttering Battle Plan
Suddenly, it’s Spring! Wow, the sunshine, the birds in the morning, the little green shoots poking out of the garden. It puts a real spring in my step, pardon the pun.
If you’re feeling rejuvenated by the change of the season, I want to encourage you to do the one activity that any homeowner can do to increase the resale value of their home. Can you guess what it is? It starts with a “D” and ends in “clutter.” Yes, decluttering is the absolute best thing to help your home sell more quickly and for more money.
Here’s how to get started. First, you can reach out to me and request your copy of “The Decluttering Battle Plan.” It’s a guidebook I wrote to help my senior clients with the biggest obstacle they have to downsizing - their accumulated surplus belongings - a.k.a junk.
“The Decluttering Battle Plan” is a straightforward 5-step strategy that compiles the best expert advice from professional organizers and efficiency experts. It’s free for the asking at smartrealtysolution.com or by calling me, Sharon, at 416-460-5636.
If you’re super keen to start but aren’t sure how, you can also enrol in our “30-Day Decluttering Challenge.” This email campaign is designed to help you overcome the overwhelm by giving you “bite-sized” tasks to do over the course of a month. Each day you’ll receive a task, a tip, and some inspiration to go with your perspiration. And of course, like everything at SMART Realty Solutions it’s free of charge or obligation.
While the strategies themselves are outlined in the resources I’ve referenced, I want to share some additional tips for anyone wanting to declutter their homes.
- Decluttering is not reorganizing your piles - it’s actually reducing the overall quantity of possessions by eliminating the duplicates, the unused, the unwanted belongings from your life. Shuffling stuff is not what your future self needs. It needs less stuff to worry about!
- Start in the area that needs it the most. Let’s say that’s the basement. Starting there will allow you to focus your energy and free up storage space for the belongings that are wanted AND used, but have not earned a spot in your daily use areas.
- Do not engage your attention with pictures or papers. These are a separate category for sorting and should be set aside to be dealt with at a later date. It is far too easy to get sidetracked by papers and pictures and lose time and energy wandering down memory lane.
- Use my green painters’ tape 5-second hack. Start identifying the housewares, furniture and clothing that you no longer want or use. As you pick something up, ask yourself, “Stay or go?” Your instantaneous answer is what you act on. Label everything that you aren’t keeping with the green tape. Green for go!
- Don’t wait to declutter. As I tell my clients, you have time or you have money. Even if you aren’t planning to move this year, start now on reducing the clutter. Your future self with thank you. And if you are planning to move sooner, then you may need to hire out some of the decluttering to help move forward on your goal of downsizing. (Pun intended.)
With the resources we provide our clients, we empower their self-sufficiency and decision-making ability. “The Decluttering Battle Plan,” and “30-Day Decluttering Challenge” are just two examples of how we help downsizing seniors. Every aspect of SMART Realty Solutions is geared toward reducing the stress, work and worry that comes with the decision to move.
If this sounds like the concierge real estate services you are looking for, why not call me, Sharon, at my direct line, 416-460-5636 to have a conversation about creating a custom plan for you.
