S.M.A.R.T. Realty Solutions in the Community

 

Good morning, Marilyn. You know, having been part of your team for these many months, I feel as if we are building a community together. You, me, and our beloved FAWP listeners. I love the opportunity to provide valuable content geared towards empowering downsizing seniors.

But did you know that more than 40 times in 2025 I will be out in the community speaking to groups ranging from a handful to a hundred as we deliver our downsizing workshops. These workshops were specifically designed to address the real life concerns I hear from my clients as they face the prospect of leaving their long-time oversized home, for a new home that suits their aging in place needs. 

When I come to speak to your group, whether at a church, synagogue, or temple, a cultural drop in, PROBUS club, or 55+ seniors group there are a few things you should know ahead of time:

  1. We never charge for our talks or workshops. It’s an important part of SMART Realty Solutions to come from contribution, and provide our expert advice free of cost or obligation. All the accompanying workbooks are also available as free downloadable PDFs from our website at smartrealtysolution.com.
  2. We never give a sales pitch. Our intention is to help you, not ourselves, so don’t expect to get some heavy-duty self promotion when I speak at your club. My business cards will be on the table, and if people want them, then they’re there, but that’s it. We only work with people who want to work with us, and so far we’ve been blessed with a steady supply of potential clients who see our value. No arm twisting permitted!
  3. We’re never boring! Your time is valuable, and if you’ve been kind enough to come to one of our workshops you should expect interesting, interactive content. I’ll do my level best to give you relevant information, timely inspiration, and a humourous take on the issues at hand.

Another community outreach SMART Realty Solutions is involved in is supporting seniors’ charities. In York Region, our charity of choice is CHATS, which stands for Community Housing and Transportation for Seniors. They run valuable drop in programs for seniors to combat loneliness and caregiver burnout. They organize transportation for medical appointments, and they deliver meals to shut-ins through their meals on wheels program. 

Twice each year SMART Realty Solutions organizes our Community Paper Shredding event as a fundraiser for CHATS. We invite members of the community to bring their unwanted documents for secure, while-you-watch shredding. I pay for the shredding truck to be at three different locations, and people sign up for a time to bring their papers. We collect a suggested donation of $10 per box, which is far less than you’d pay at a retail shredding location. At our last event we shredded 2300 lbs of paper, and raised more than $1000 for CHATS. 

If you have old utility bills, tax files, or similar paper clutter, our Community Shredding event is an excellent way to get rid of the clutter while supporting a very worthwhile cause. Finally, SMART Realty Solutions is out in the community when we do our area Condo Market Experience tours. This past week, I took out a total of 25 seniors to look at condos in four areas. We had so much fun seeing the different buildings, prices, and amenities that each building offered. Along the way, I shared my expert insight into the condo-buying process, and a copy of our workbook, “Condo Considerations.” It was wonderful to see such a range of options in person because online pictures often don’t do these condos justice. 

Marilyn, I guess that’s the takeaway here: as much as I love and appreciate our loyal FAWP audience, there is no substitute for getting face to face with people. Whether during a one on one coffee meeting, or an in-person community speaking engagement, or at one of our community events, I value the connections that are forged and strengthened when we spend time together.
